MENTAL PRISONS

In a vast wheat field, the artist delineates a rectangle through his own movement. Once the perimeter has been traced, he remains confined within it for the entire day: sixteen consecutive hours, from sunrise to sunset.
The body walks, stops, observes, sits down, lies down, walks again, but never crosses the boundary it has created itself. No external constraint prevents its escape. There are no walls, bars, or containment devices: the prison is entirely mental.
The performance explores the psychological cages that human beings construct and inhabit on a daily basis. Anxiety, obsessive thinking, rumination, and recurring cognitive patterns become a visible spatial structure, a geography of the invisible that translates the functioning of many mental processes into physical form. In psychology, rumination is described as the tendency to persistently revisit the same emotional and cognitive content, producing a subjective sense of immobility even as time continues to pass. The performance makes this condition tangible: movement is constant, but there is no progress; the body covers meters that become kilometers, while its existence remains fixed in the same place. The dimensions of the perimeter—approximately 3 × 2 meters—correspond to the average size of an Italian prison cell. Beyond its symbolic function, this choice creates an overlap between physical and psychological imprisonment. While a prison restricts movement through material confinement, the mental cage produces a similar effect without any tangible barrier.

The conceptual core of the work emerges from the confrontation between two opposing dynamics.
On one side, the stillness of the human mind, represented by an individual who continues to move within an unchanging space, unable to cross a threshold that exists only in his own mind. On the other, the incessant movement of the natural world: the wind alters the surface of the wheat, the light transforms the landscape, shadows shift, and colors change according to the cycle of the sun. Everything around him evolves.
Nature becomes a true theatre of change, while the subject remains trapped in a repetition that recalls the circular structure of anxious thought. The work highlights one of the deepest contradictions of contemporary life: the possibility of being a prisoner in the midst of freedom, confined not by what the world imposes, but by what the mind constructs.
The vastness of the wheat field suggests infinite possible directions, a multitude of paths and opportunities. Yet, at the center of this immensity, the artist voluntarily occupies a minimal space.
When the sun sets, the subject finally leaves the perimeter and resumes walking through the open space. However, leaving the cell does not coincide with its dissolution, but rather with a temporary reprieve. Mental prisons are not permanent conditions; they are phenomena that regenerate themselves on a daily basis. They loosen, disappear for a while, seem to vanish, and then reconstitute themselves the following day.
