URANIO L'IMPOVERITO with Francesco Garbelli
Milano 2026 / 1,20 x 1 mt - mixed media
A dented tin garbage bin takes on the appearance of a homeless person, holding a sign that reads: “I’M HUNGRY!”
The donation bowl is replaced by a military helmet, but instead of money, it contains ammunition. Symbolically linked to depleted uranium and military technology, the bin becomes at once a weapon, a victim, and a disposable body. Hunger is no longer the hunger of someone asking for help, but the hunger of a system that needs war to keep functioning: production, consumption, power.
The installation refers to the consequences of the use of depleted uranium and to the suffering caused by the exposure of military personnel and civilian populations. Thousands of people have experienced serious health consequences connected to the use of weapons and military materials, within systems far larger than themselves and about which they knew very little. And in front of that “body” lying on the street, the words on the sign take on a second meaning: perhaps it is not the bin that is hungry. Perhaps it is the system itself.
