FATE PRESTO

Bucaletto is a working-class neighborhood on the outskirts of Potenza. It was built in the immediate aftermath of the 1980 Irpinia earthquake with the goal of creating temporary housing for displaced residents. The master plan envisioned the gradual dismantling of the prefabricated buildings and the construction of social housing for the most disadvantaged families on the same site. Forty-two years later, Bucaletto is still there. Most of the prefabricated structures contain asbestos, basic health and sanitary conditions fall below standard, and a nearby steel mill releases high levels of harmful dioxins into the air.
The words "FATE PRESTO" ("Hurry Up") were painted onto one of the neighborhood's homes, directly referencing the iconic front-page headline published by the newspaper Il Mattino on November 26, 1980—a headline that has since entered the history of Italian journalism. "FATE PRESTO" was a desperate plea forged during days of rage and pain, marred by delayed relief efforts and a lack of coordination.
It echoes the speech of President Sandro Pertini, one of the first to arrive at the disaster sites, who declared: "What I witnessed was a lack of the immediate aid that should have been provided. From the rubble, the desperate cries of those buried alive could still be heard," while urging everyone "to lend help to these brothers and sisters struck by tragedy. Because the best way to remember the dead is to care for the living."
Recreating the words in the original font of the newspaper, the artist evokes that historic cry to highlight how, 42 years on, there remains an urgent, desperate need to find immediate solutions for the people still living there—surrounded by asbestos and dioxins, entirely invisible to the authorities.
It has only been 42 years. FATE PRESTO.

Bucaletto è un quartiere popolare della periferia di Potenza. Fu progettato all'indomani del terremoto dell'Irpinia del 1980, con l'obiettivo di trasformare l'area in un agglomerato di alloggi per gli sfollati. Il piano prevedeva il graduale smantellamento dei prefabbricati, e la costruzione nella stessa area di alloggi popolari da assegnare alle famiglie più disagiate. Dopo 42 anni Bucaletto è ancora lì. La maggior parte dei prefabbricati contiene amianto, le condizioni igienico sanitarie sono sotto lo standard e, inoltre, nelle vicinanze è presente un'acciaieria che porta una grande quantità di diossine nell'aria, altamente dannosa per l'uomo.
La scritta "FATE PRESTO" è stata realizzata sopra una delle abitazioni del quartiere e riprende il titolo di copertina riportato dal quotidiano Il Mattino il 26 Novembre 1980, diventato nel tempo un titolo che fa parte della storia del giornalismo italiano. "FATE PRESTO" fu un appello disperato nei giorni della rabbia e del dolore, segnati dal ritardo dei soccorsi e dalla mancanza di coordinamento. Si sente l'eco del discorso del Presidente Pertini, tra i primi ad arrivare nei luoghi del disastro, che disse: "Quello che ho potuto constatare è che non vi sono stati i soccorsi immediati che avrebbero dovuto esserci. Dalle macerie si sentivano grida di disperazione dei sepolti vivi", invitando tutti "ad andare in aiuto a questi fratelli colpiti da questa sciagura. Perché, credetemi, il modo migliore di ricordare i morti è quello di pensare ai vivi".
Utilizzando lo stesso font del titolo del quotidiano, l'artista ha deciso di riproporre quelle parole per sottolineare come, dopo 42 anni, ci sia ancora un bisogno imminente e disperato di trovare urgentemente delle soluzioni per le persone che ancora vivono lì, in mezzo all'amianto e alla diossina, del tutto invisibili per le istituzioni.
Sono passati solo 42 anni, FATE PRESTO.
