APOCALYPSE TRILOGY with Francesco Garbelli

Apocalypse Trilogy is a series consisting of three works that differ in technique and installation, yet are united by the same protagonists: flowers. The trilogy explores themes related to globalization, consumerism, and the looming environmental catastrophe through paradoxical and allegorical scenarios. The flowers appear obese as a result of a fast-food lifestyle, are "grown" inside cages where they develop crammed together in a form of intensive floral farming, or are laboratory-born and nourished through experimental biochemical compounds. The trilogy questions the mechanisms of the global industrial machine, portrayed as an indifferent and unstoppable system that has become the primary driving force behind an impending, entirely human-made apocalypse. The flower, the quintessential symbol of fragility and beauty, endures these transformations helplessly and, in order to survive, is forced to adapt its very nature to the conditions imposed by humankind.
Each installation was previously placed within an urban public green space and accompanied by a sign identifying the "benefactor" who, as a sponsor, contributes to "caring for" the social issue staged by the artists.

ENGULF & DEVOUR

Milan, 2021 /
2,60 x 2,10 mt - mixed media

The second intervention in the series is titled “Engulf & Devour”. Hundreds of flowers live—or rather, survive—imprisoned in rusty cages. The image of these crowded flowers, stripped of their living space, inevitably evokes the issue of factory farming and the notorious wet markets along with their modus operandi.
On a broader level, the installation serves as a metaphor for a certain—and dominant—way of conceiving the economy: advocating for infinite growth, which stands in stark contrast to the fundamental reality of our finite planet.
The public green area where the cages are placed is curated by Engulf & Devour, whose motto, "Our fingers are in everything," highlights the very "ideals" that often drive real-world multinational corporations.
Unlike the first installation, "Super Size Flowers," which called out the father of all fast food, Engulf & Devour is a fictional company—a direct reference to Mel Brooks' famous film Silent Movie.
In the movie, Engulf & Devour is a conglomerate attempting to acquire a film production studio by any means necessary to secure a media monopoly. It is striking how, in this new context, while retaining its ironic and irreverent edge, the company takes on broader, more universal meanings, offering fresh food for thought on issues discussed—yet left unresolved—at COP26.

OMNIA GLOBAL DEFENSE

Milan, 2026 /
2,40 x 0.70 mt - mixed media

Omnia Global Defense is the third and final installation of the trilogy. This time, we are confronted with a multinational holding company investing in two of the most profitable sectors of the global market: one division designs and manufactures weapons, while another is dedicated to pharmaceutical research. While, from an ethical standpoint, it may seem contradictory to develop increasingly efficient systems of death while simultaneously investing in the preservation of life at any cost, from a business perspective everything operates seamlessly.
Here, the flowers become both a mirror and a metaphor for a dystopian future that no longer belongs to the realm of imagination, but to the present. Increasingly less natural and increasingly laboratory-made, they are protected and isolated from the outside world beneath glass domes that reinforce the rhetoric of nature as a common good while, in reality, making it inaccessible.
