Fearing potential theft, Amazon couriers refuse to enter the neighborhood: residents must walk to a designated drop-off point at the entrance of the district to collect their orders. It is often said that capitalism fears nothing, yet this does not seem to apply to San Cristóbal de los Ángeles.
“Reja.zon” is a fictitious brand created to ironically push beyond every barrier and fear. It aims to forge a connection with the local community, demonstrating that no boundary can prevent human beings from cultivating relational or cultural exchanges.
After analyzing the various window grille designs across the neighborhood, six custom cardboard boxes were engineered. Their exact shapes and dimensions allow them to slip perfectly through the gaps between the bars. The grilles in San Cristóbal are all fixed, non-opening structures—a common cost-saving feature in social housing.
Defying a physical restriction that embodies distrust and fear of the unknown, the artist produced a series of customized packages. Through the performance of hand-delivery, these objects are transformed into certified, one-of-a-kind artworks.
Each participant received a box containing a signed certificate of authenticity. What elevates the object into an artwork is the act of passing it through the iron bars, initiating a dialogue between two strangers and momentarily dismantling a physical and social barrier. Without this exchange, the package would remain nothing more than cardboard holding a plain sheet of paper.
This approach stands in stark contrast to corporate giants like Amazon, which rely on a handful of standardized box sizes to ship over 350 million different items—prioritizing speed and uniformity at the cost of immense waste. Reja.zon boxes, by contrast, are tailor-made to fit the specific architecture of people's homes and their individual realities. They offer a bespoke design crafted to cross barriers that often stem simply from fear.
Over the course of a week, six Reja.zon packages were successfully delivered throughout the barrio—six works gifted by the artist to show that sometimes, a simple human gesture is all it takes to break through an iron wall.
